The fourth season of NCIS begins with one of the investigators being charged with assassinating an Iranian prisoner. Former Mossad intelligence agent Ziva David (Cote de Pablo), who was introduced last season, has been framed, and there's only one man who can clear her name. Unfortunately, lead investigator Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) has retired to Mexico. But since Harmon is the star of the show, Gibbs returns to the United States to help out his colleague. While most of his former team is happy, Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) has mixed feelings (During Gibbs' absence, DiNozzo became the de facto head of the team, and going back to being Gibbs' underling doesn't sit well with the usually easygoing special agent.). Like William Petersen on CSI, Harmon is instrumental to the success of NCIS. Low-key and sarcastic, he injects humor and drama into a role that could've come off as dull. And while other cast members may come and go, his presence makes even some of the weaker storylines forgivable. In general, this season--which originally aired from 2006 to 2007--is full of well-developed plot lines that drive each episode along at a good pace. But there are some subplots that are trite: When agent Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) reveals that that book he's writing is based on his co-workers, it's not much of a reveal. Also, the serial-killer storyline in this season overstays its welcome by at least one episode. As NCIS director Jennifer Shepard, Lauren Holly makes a sometimes unlikable character come to life, especially when Shepard's motives are questionable. As the show's name suggests, the majority of crimes featured revolve around military personnel, but some of the show's best moments occur when they touch of the personal relationships between the characters. All 24 episodes are included in this six-disc box set, which also includes commentaries, a Q&A session with cast members answer fans' questions, and a surprisingly interesting look at the props used on the show. --Jae-Ha Kim

| 68 of 74 people found the following review helpful  Too Complicated, But the Magic is There, By This review is from: NCIS - The Complete Fourth Season (DVD) Called the "Season of Secrets" by the producers of the series, NCIS SEASON 4 actually turned out much more complicated than most of the actors, writers, directors, and fans wanted it to be. For the first time, the series sought to build ongoing storylines that would elevate NCIS to a soap opera level that wasn't much appreciated.The season was too busy. Too much plotting demanded watching every episode in sequence rather than casually dropping in for entertainment. Even with devoted attendance instead of a casual approach, these extended storylines took far too long to develop. I got irritated and impatient with all the split plotlines and romances. When I watch the crimes shows I keep up with, I depend on them to be entertaining and intriguing, but not to the point that I have to keep notes. I didn't watch HEROES in its first season run for this very reason, and it's also why I abdicate 24. I picked those shows up in DVD and squander weekends of marathon... Another great show from the creator of Magnum P.I. I regret that I didn't start watching this show until midway through the third season.ell, I now own the first three seasons on DVD, and I'm chomping at the bit waiting for season 4 to come out. Great writing, wonderful characters, incredible directing. As a general rule, I despise most TV, but I cannot say enough good things about NCIS. The writing has remained consistently great. Well written plots, with great dialogue make for a good show. It is the development of the characters that separates this from other good shows. As real people do, these characters grow and change with their experiences. This season started with a bang, literally. This season also contained more story arcs that run through the season and collide together at the cliffhanger. Always entertaining with plenty of action and drama, but also full of humor, NCIS is simply great. |
