The violence ranges from HK's kung fu to Michael Bay style blockbuster action. The fan-service exploitation is shonen-anime standard. The plot is zombie standard, set in the unique perspective of a Japanese high school. But each of these media "standards" is uniquely used in HOTD. This isn't your Resident Evil style story, more like your Dawn of the Dead multiplied by Japan. It echoes series like Gantz in terms of violence (although not as graphic) and at the same time it has almost a Love Hina meets Full Metal Panic feel.The blend of goofy comedy and fan-service shots and scenes with the grim storyline works in the sense that the story remains human (no pun intended), as society crumbles around them, the group in HOTD contends with coming to terms with their own vulnerabilities and reliance on one another. The series has enough zombies, action, and cheesecake to create a hyper ideal male fantasy. Women may judge differently.However I would not recommend buying this from Amazon through their download system. The video quality is terrible, and the DVD or Blu-ray contains the series in beautiful HD. Low quality video with huge file size, Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: High School of the Dead - 01 - Spring of the DEAD (Amazon Instant Video) I really like this anime, but the download quality in relation to the file size on amazon video on demand is horrible. The file was 500 mb, but the video quality (not animation quality)was just horrible. I've seen the first episode in HD quality before and it was only 250 mbs. Its probably due to poor encoding when they translated the anime into English. Also, this is my first amazon video on demand purchase. They should really think of using a new file format must be consuming bandwidth and storage space. |
